Why this needs its own review
Melanin provides some intrinsic protection from ultraviolet light. It does not provide enough, it provides none against the pigmentary problems that follow sun exposure, and it does nothing to make skin cancer impossible. What it changes is the shape of the risk. In deeper skin, sun damage more often presents as uneven tone, stubborn dark patches after spots or shaving irritation, and melasma that returns every summer. Skin cancer is less common but tends to be found later, which is a reason for vigilance rather than reassurance.
The second reason for a separate review is that the failure mode of a sunscreen changes with skin tone. On pale skin a mineral formula that leaves a slight cast is a minor annoyance. On deep skin the same formula produces a grey film that is visible from across a room. That is not a cosmetic quibble. It is the reason a bottle sits unused, and an unused bottle scores zero regardless of the filters inside it.
The third reason is visible light. Ultraviolet is not the only part of the spectrum that drives pigmentation. Visible light, particularly at the blue end, contributes to melasma and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation in melanin rich skin, and no clear sunscreen filters it. Iron oxide pigments do. This is why a tinted formulation outscores a clear one here while the reverse would be true for a fair skinned reader with no pigmentation concern.
How the formats score for deep skin
Scores rate formulation categories, never brands, using the framework on our method page. Cosmetic acceptability carries more weight in this review than in any other, because on deep skin it determines whether the product is used at all.

The untinted zinc cream at 62 is the clearest example on this site of a formulation that tests well and performs poorly. The UV numbers are fine. The wearability is not, and protection you abandon in July is not protection.
What to look for
- Iron oxides in the ingredient list if you have any pigmentation concern. This is the only widely available way to add visible light protection to a daily sunscreen.
- Photostable organic filters for a genuinely clear finish. The triazine class filters give full spectrum cover with no white residue at all.
- A finish that matches your skin's natural light. A flat matte finish can read as ashy on deep skin even without a mineral cast. A satin finish usually looks like skin.
- Enough shades to find one that disappears. A tinted product in the wrong shade is worse than a clear one, because it grey casts and colour mismatches at the same time.
- A separate answer for hairlines and partings. A clear fluid or a light spray covers scalp exposure that a tinted cream cannot.
What to avoid
- Untinted mineral formulas at protective loads. They will cast. Accept it and choose a different category rather than fighting the physics.
- The belief that deep skin does not need sunscreen. The pigmentary consequences of exposure are more visible and more persistent, not less.
- Judging shade match under shop lighting. Check in daylight, on the jaw and neck rather than the hand, before committing.
- Ignoring exposure after treatment. Post inflammatory pigmentation after acne, laser or any inflammatory episode is far worse with sun exposure and far better with consistent protection.

Who this category suits
Anyone with melasma. Tinted, iron oxide containing formulations applied every day, all year, are the single most effective intervention available outside a clinic. Clear sunscreen alone is often why treatment plateaus.
Skin that marks after every spot. Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation deepens and lasts longer with sun exposure. Daily protection is the difference between marks that fade in weeks and marks that last a year.

The verdict
This category scores 86 out of 100, and the ranking inside it is the most decisive on the site. A tinted hybrid fluid with iron oxides at 90 does something no other format does, which is protect against the visible light that drives the pigmentation problems most people in this group are actually trying to solve. A clear organic filter fluid at 86 is an excellent second choice with no shade matching difficulty.
The formats to leave behind are untinted mineral creams, whatever their SPF. The cast is not a minor flaw to be blended away. It is the reason the bottle stops being used, and every score in our framework ultimately measures protection delivered rather than protection promised.
