The short answer

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both as the only UV filters. As a category they score 82 out of 100 in our framework: excellent tolerability and immediate protection on application, held back by the fact that a cosmetically pleasant mineral texture usually means a lower filter load, and that people apply thin layers of anything that feels heavy. A zinc oxide cream at a high filter load is the strongest mineral format we score. Brush-on mineral powder is the weakest, because the dose reaching the skin is a small fraction of what any SPF test uses.

What counts as a mineral sunscreen

A mineral sunscreen is one where every UV filter in the formula is an inorganic particle. In the UK that means zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or the two together. There is no third option, because those are the only inorganic filters on the permitted list. Everything else in the bottle is doing a supporting job: dispersing the particles, holding them in an even film, making the texture bearable and keeping the emulsion stable.

The category is often sold on the idea that mineral filters sit on top of the skin and reflect light like tiny mirrors. That is a simplification that has survived long past its usefulness. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide absorb most of the UV that reaches them and convert it to heat, in the same way organic filters do. A modest amount is scattered and reflected. The practical consequence is the same either way: what protects you is a continuous film of filter across the skin at a sufficient thickness.

That single fact drives most of this review. Mineral formulations have a real advantage in tolerability and a real disadvantage in how much product people are willing to spread. We score the category on what actually lands on skin, not on what the bottle could do under test conditions.

The gap between a high load zinc cream at 86 and a brush-on powder at 48 is not a judgement about mineral chemistry. It is a judgement about delivered dose. The same filter, in a format nobody applies thickly, protects far less.

What to look for

  • Zinc oxide named high in the ingredient list, not as an afterthought. UV filters must be declared, and their position gives you a usable signal about the load. In the UK the concentration is not always printed on the pack, so position and finish are what you have.
  • SPF 30 or 50 with the UVA in a circle mark. That mark means the UVA protection factor is at least a third of the labelled SPF. Without it you are guessing about the half of the spectrum that drives ageing and pigmentation.
  • A dispersant such as polyhydroxystearic acid. Uneven mineral dispersion is the main cause of the streaky, patchy film that leaves gaps you cannot see.
  • Iron oxides if pigmentation is your concern. Tinted mineral bases add visible light protection that clear formulas do not offer, and they cancel the grey cast at the same time.
  • A texture you will use twice a day. This sounds soft, and it is the single strongest predictor of real protection. A pleasant SPF 30 applied properly beats a stiff SPF 50 applied thinly.

What to avoid

  • Powder or brush-on formats as your only protection. The dose is nowhere near the two milligrams per square centimetre used in testing. Treat them as a cosmetic top up over a properly applied base, if at all.
  • Titanium dioxide alone at low levels. It covers UVB well and long UVA poorly. If it is the only filter, check for the UVA mark before you trust it.
  • Claims that mineral filters are natural and therefore gentler by nature. Zinc oxide is a manufactured mineral. Its low irritancy is a real, measurable property, not a consequence of where it came from.
  • Very high SPF numbers in stiff, waxy bases. The number was earned at full test dose. In a texture that drags, most people apply between a quarter and a half of that.
  • Assuming mineral means reef friendly. That phrase has no legal definition in the UK, and we set out what it does and does not mean in our review of reef safe claims.

Who this category suits

Skin that reacts to everything. Mineral filters have the lowest rate of photoallergic and contact reactions of any filter class in routine use. Very young children. Not because organic filters are dangerous, but because a simple formula with few ingredients reduces the number of things that can cause a reaction on skin that cannot tell you it is uncomfortable. Post procedure and compromised skin barriers. Freshly treated skin, healing scars and active eczema all tolerate mineral bases better on average.

People who want protection from the moment they walk out. A mineral film works as soon as it is spread evenly, with no waiting period for the film to set the way some organic emulsions prefer.

It suits you less well if you have deep skin tone and want a clear finish, if you swim for hours, or if you wear sunscreen under makeup every day. Each of those has a better matched category on this site.

The verdict

Mineral sunscreen earns 82 out of 100 as a category. It is the most reliable choice for reactive skin and the most predictable in terms of what the filter does under UV, since zinc oxide does not photodegrade the way some organic filters can. It loses points on delivered dose, because the textures that protect best are the textures people ration.

The best use of this category is a high zinc cream for face and shoulders in a routine you will actually keep, or a tinted mineral fluid if pigmentation is your concern. Frequently asked questions

Are mineral sunscreens better than chemical ones?

Not as a general rule. Mineral filters have a lower irritation risk and are more photostable. Modern organic filters usually give better UVA balance per unit of product and a lighter texture that people apply more generously. The best filter class is the one you will apply properly, twice a day, on the skin you have.

Does zinc oxide protect against UVA?

Yes, and it is the only single filter permitted in the UK that meaningfully covers both UVB and long UVA. The strength of that coverage depends on the concentration and on how evenly the particles are dispersed. Check for the UVA in a circle mark rather than assuming zinc alone is enough.

Why does my mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?

Because zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are white pigments and you are applying a visible layer of them. The cast is a sign the film is there. Tinted formulas with iron oxides cancel it optically, which is why they score higher for most skin tones.

Is nano zinc oxide safe to use?

European safety assessments have concluded that nano zinc oxide and nano titanium dioxide are acceptable in leave on skin products at the permitted concentrations, because the particles do not pass through intact skin. The same assessments advise against spray formats where the particles could be inhaled.

Can I use mineral sunscreen on a baby?

Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sun rather than relying on sunscreen at all. For older babies and toddlers, a simple fragrance free mineral cream is a reasonable choice, applied thickly and topped up. Shade, hats and clothing still do more work than any bottle.
