Water resistant sunscreen: what the claim means and which formats hold

The short answer

Water resistant is a tested claim, not a marketing phrase. To carry it, a formulation must retain at least half of its labelled SPF after two twenty minute immersions in water. Very water resistant requires the same after four immersions, which is where the eighty minute figure comes from. As a category, water resistant formulations score 85 out of 100. A very water resistant organic filter emulsion earns 88, the strongest performer. Sprays sold for sport earn 60, because the claim is tested on a full applied film and a spray rarely delivers one.

What the claim is tested to

Water resistance is one of the few sunscreen claims with a published, repeatable test behind it. A panel has the product applied at the standard test dose. The SPF is measured. The panel then enters water for twenty minutes, rests, and repeats. After two immersions the SPF is measured again. If the retained value is at least half the original, the product may be labelled water resistant. Four immersions, same criterion, earns very water resistant.

Two things follow that are worth saying plainly. First, the standard permits a fifty per cent loss. A very water resistant SPF 50 that meets the criterion exactly is performing at SPF 25 by the end of the fourth immersion. Second, the test involves still immersion. It does not involve swimming against a current, rubbing on sand, or the single most destructive act in sun protection, which is drying yourself with a towel.

Nothing on the UK market may be labelled waterproof or sweatproof, because neither claim can be substantiated. If you see those words, you are looking at either an old pack or an imported one.

The stick at 76 is a good illustration of how these scores work. It is an excellent water resistant format for the parts of a face that burn first, and a poor one for anything larger, so it scores in the middle of a category where it is genuinely useful.

What to look for

  • The words very water resistant rather than water resistant. They are different tests and the difference is two more immersions.
  • A film forming polymer named in the ingredient list. Acrylate copolymers, VP/eicosene copolymer and silicones are what hold the filter film in place when water hits it.
  • Photostable filters if you are out for hours. A stable triazine system or zinc oxide will still be working at four in the afternoon in a way that unsupported avobenzone may not.
  • An emulsion rather than a fluid for beach and pool days. Water in oil emulsions resist sheeting off far better than the light aqueous fluids that suit daily face wear.
  • A pack size that lets you use enough. Around thirty five millilitres covers an adult body properly. A small tube for a family week is a false economy.

What to avoid

  • Treating water resistant as a reason to reapply less. Two hours remains the interval, and immediately after towel drying regardless of the clock.
  • Sprays as the primary product for a swimming day. The tested film and the sprayed film are not the same thing, and the gap widens in any breeze.
  • Applying at the beach rather than before leaving. The film needs time and a dry surface to set. Sand, sweat and wet skin all work against it.
  • Assuming a rash vest means you can skip the exposed areas. Necks, ear tops, foot bridges and the backs of knees are the classic burn sites on swimming days.
  • Forgetting that water reflects UV upward. Time spent in water is not shaded time, and the World Health Organization UV index guidance is a useful reference for judging exposure.

Who this category suits

Swimmers and open water users. A very water resistant emulsion applied twenty minutes before entering, then reapplied on exit, is the routine the test is designed around.

Anyone who sweats heavily. Sweat sheets a non resistant film off the forehead and into the eyes within an hour. Water resistance is as much a comfort feature as a protection one here.

The verdict

Water resistance scores 85 out of 100 as a category, which is high, and the reason is that this is one of the few areas where the label claim maps onto a genuine standardised test. You are not being asked to trust a marketing department. You are being told the product survived two or four immersions with at least half its protection intact.

What the score cannot fix is behaviour. The single largest cause of burning on a swimming day is not filter failure but the towel, followed by the two hour interval quietly becoming a four hour one. Buy very water resistant, apply thirty five millilitres, and reapply the moment you are dry.

Frequently asked questions

How long does water resistant sunscreen last in water?

Forty minutes of immersion for a water resistant claim and eighty minutes for very water resistant, and in both cases the product is permitted to lose up to half its SPF over that time. Treat those figures as the outer limit of a test, not as a schedule for a day at the beach.

Is there such a thing as waterproof sunscreen?

No, and the term cannot legally be used on a UK pack. No formulation stays fully intact through immersion, friction and towel drying. Water resistant and very water resistant are the only two claims that can be substantiated by testing.

Do I need to reapply after towelling if I have only just applied?

Yes. Towel drying is mechanical removal, and it takes off far more of the film than the water did. Reapply after every dry off, regardless of how recently you last applied and regardless of the water resistance claim.

Does water resistant sunscreen work for sweating?

Broadly yes. The same film formers that resist immersion also resist sweat sheeting, which is why they are used in sport formats. Heavy sweat with friction from clothing or a helmet strap will still shift the film faster than still water does.

Is a higher SPF more water resistant?

No. The two properties are independent. SPF measures the level of protection at full dose and water resistance measures how much of it survives immersion. A water resistant SPF 30 will outlast a non resistant SPF 50 in a pool.
